Adding the Nessie connector on Team and Enterprise plans

On managed Claude and ChatGPT plans, individual members often cannot add a custom connector themselves. A workspace owner or admin controls the capability, so if your seats don't see an option to add a custom connector, an admin has to turn it on first.

Claude Team and Enterprise

On Claude Team and Enterprise plans, only an Owner or Primary Owner can add a custom connector, and the Owner adds it once for the whole organization:

  1. In Claude, go to Organization settings → Connectors.
  2. Click Add → Custom → Web.
  3. Enter Nessie as the name and https://mcp.nessielabs.com as the remote MCP server URL, then save.

After the Owner adds Nessie, each member goes to Customize → Connectors, finds Nessie, clicks Connect, and authorizes with their own Nessie account. Members authenticate individually, so each person only reaches their own Nessie library. They can then enable Nessie for a conversation from the "+" menu in the chat composer → Connectors.

Members on a Claude Team or Enterprise plan cannot add a custom connector themselves. This is by design - the Owner adds the connector once at the organization level and members connect individually.

ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu

On managed ChatGPT workspaces, custom MCP connectors live behind Developer Mode, which a workspace admin controls:

  1. A workspace Admin or Owner goes to Workspace Settings → Permissions & Roles → Connected Data and enables Developer mode / Create custom MCP connectors.
  2. On Enterprise and Edu workspaces, Developer Mode is off by default. Admins can grant Developer Mode to specific people or roles using role-based access controls.
  3. Once a member has Developer Mode access, that member enables it from Settings → Security and login → Developer mode, then opens Plugins → Browse plugins, clicks the + button, and follows the ChatGPT connector steps.
On ChatGPT, an admin enables the capability (Developer Mode) and permitted members then add the connector themselves. On Claude, the Owner adds the one connector for everyone. The end state is the same - your team reaches Nessie - but the admin step differs by provider.
