Hermes connector

Connect Hermes to Nessie's hosted MCP server so the agent can search and read the context in your Nessie library. The setup has two parts: the MCP connection exposes Nessie tools, and the Nessie skill teaches Hermes when and how to use them.

Requirements:

  • Hermes must be installed
  • Cloud Sync must be enabled in Nessie so the hosted MCP server can read your synced library
  • Create an agent API key in Nessie → Settings → Security (API keys on older app versions). Copy it when it appears; it is shown once

Paste this into Hermes:

Connect this Hermes agent to Nessie.

1. Inspect and install the Nessie skill by running:
   hermes skills inspect nessielabs/nessie-hermes/skills/nessie
   hermes skills install nessielabs/nessie-hermes/skills/nessie --yes

2. Do not ask me to paste a Nessie API key into this chat. Tell me to open a private terminal and run:
   hermes mcp add nessie --url {{NESSIE_MCP_SHELL_URL}} --auth header

3. At the hidden "API key / Bearer token" prompt, remind me to enter only the raw sk_nes_v1_... key. When Hermes asks which tools to enable, tell me to choose "select" and start with the recommended read-only Nessie tools.

4. After I confirm the private setup is complete, run:
   hermes mcp test nessie

5. Tell me to start a new Hermes session and test the connection with "Nessie check-in".

Enter only the raw Nessie key at Hermes's hidden credential prompt, not an Authorization: Bearer ... header. Hermes stores the key in ~/.hermes/.env as MCP_NESSIE_API_KEY; its config.yaml contains an environment-variable reference rather than the secret itself. Do not paste the key into a Hermes conversation.

Updates:

Automatic update checks are available in Nessie skill version 0.1.11 and later. The first time you use Nessie in a session, Hermes checks for a newer skill and points you to its built-in updater when one is available. Nessie's hosted tools stay current automatically.

If Hermes does not check for updates, install the latest Nessie skill:

hermes skills update nessie

Run hermes mcp configure nessie if you later want to opt into specific context/profile write or deletion tools. Keep the read-only set when Hermes only needs to research and answer from your library.
