BrainLift: The Complete Template

This document provides a comprehensive, step-by-step template for building a BrainLift. Each section includes a detailed explanation of its purpose and structure, designed to guide you from foundational knowledge to advanced, original insights. Crucially, a BrainLift is designed to serve as structured context for AI conversations, allowing you to easily share your curated knowledge with any AI model.

Owners

This section lists the primary authors and maintainers of the BrainLift.

  • [Name 1]
  • [Name 2]

Purpose

This section establishes the core mission and boundaries of your BrainLift.

Purpose

The “Purpose” statement is the North Star of your BrainLift. It should clearly and concisely define the central goal or question you are exploring. A strong purpose statement provides direction for your research and ensures that all content you add is relevant.

  • Example: The purpose of this BrainLift is to redefine how we think about education. It is built on the belief that the future of learning is not tied to a traditional, one-size-fits-all model but to personalized, AI-driven, self-directed learning journeys.

In Scope

This defines the specific topics, domains, and types of information that are relevant to your BrainLift’s purpose.

  • Example: Developing new knowledge and “spiky points of view” that AI cannot replicate.
  • Example: Building structured context that can be provided directly to AI in conversations.

Out of Scope

This clarifies what you will not be focusing on. Setting clear boundaries is crucial for preventing scope creep and maintaining focus.

  • Example: Using AI to synthesize, summarize, or create new knowledge (e.g., insights).
  • Example: Relying on AI to replace the process of information passing through your own brain.
  • Example: Building complex retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines; this document serves as direct context, not a database for retrieval.

DOK 4: Spiky Points of View (SPOVs)

This is the pinnacle of the BrainLift (Depth of Knowledge Level 4). A Spiky POV is not just an opinion; it is a well-reasoned, actionable, and often contrarian argument that you have developed through the synthesis of multiple insights. It is “spiky” because it takes a strong, defensible stance that is unique and not easily generated by a standard AI model.

How it Breaks Down:

A Spiky POV is forged by combining and overlapping multiple DOK 3 Insights from different domains or sources. It adapts an idea from one context to solve a problem or offer a new perspective in another. The goal is to create a new mental model or a new “rule” for thinking about your topic.

  • Spiky POV 1: [State your first Spiky POV as a strong, clear assertion.]
    • Elaboration: [Provide a detailed paragraph that defends your POV. Synthesize evidence from your DOK 3 Insights and DOK 2 Knowledge Tree to explain how you arrived at this conclusion. Explain its implications and why it is a novel or important perspective.]
  • Spiky POV 2: [State your second Spiky POV.]
    • Elaboration: [Defend and elaborate on your second POV, connecting it back to your foundational research.]

Experts

This section is a curated list of the leading thinkers, researchers, and practitioners in your domain. Following their work is essential for building the foundational knowledge needed for your BrainLift.

  • Expert 1
    • Who: [Name and title of the expert.]
    • Focus: [Describe their primary area of expertise and the main views or theories they are known for.]
    • Why Follow: [Explain specifically how this expert’s work informs your BrainLift’s purpose and helps build your own insights and SPOVs.]
    • Where: [Provide links to their work, such as a personal website, X profile, LinkedIn, Substack, or Google Scholar page.]

DOK 3: Insights

Insights are the building blocks of your Spiky POVs (Depth of Knowledge Level 3). An insight is an original conclusion, connection, or idea that you have generated after processing information from your sources. It goes beyond simple summary (DOK 2) to represent your own critical thinking.

How it’s Structured and Supports SPOVs:

Each insight should be a complete thought, derived from one or more sources in your Knowledge Tree. You should group insights thematically. Later, you will synthesize these individual insights to construct your more complex DOK 4 Spiky POVs. An insight is the bridge between the raw information you’ve gathered and the novel arguments you will make.

  • Insight 1: [State your original idea or conclusion. This should be a new connection you have made based on the information you’ve read.]
  • Insight 2: [State your next original idea, which may build on the first or explore a different facet of your research.]

DOK 2: Knowledge Tree

The Knowledge Tree is the structured foundation of your entire BrainLift (Depth of Knowledge Level 2). It is a hierarchical system where you organize the information you gather from your expert sources. This is where you break down your domain into its core components and document the facts and summaries that will fuel your higher-level thinking.

How it’s Structured and Supports the BrainLift:

The Knowledge Tree is organized from broad categories to specific facts. It directly supports the creation of Insights (DOK 3) by providing the organized, summarized information your brain needs to make new connections. Without a well-structured Knowledge Tree, it is nearly impossible to build robust, evidence-based insights and SPOVs.

  • Category 1: [Broad Topic Area]
    • Subcategory 1.1: [More Specific Topic]
      • Source 1: [Name of the Article, Book, or Video]
        • DOK 1 - Facts: This is where you list raw, objective pieces of information directly from the source. These are the fundamental units of knowledge.
          • Fact 1
          • Fact 2
        • DOK 2 - Summary: After listing the facts, you synthesize them into a concise summary in your own words. This act of summarizing is a critical DOK 2 skill and ensures you have processed the information.
          • Summary point 1
          • Summary point 2
        • Link to source: [Provide a direct URL to the source material.]
